Illusions

Things don't go to shit.

Something has changed.

Something has seemed to change.

I have changed.

Nothing changes.

The world is always getting better.

This is the best of all possible worlds.

The world just keeps getting worse.

Time is a flat circle.

All learning is remembering.

The arc of history is long.

Can all this be an illusion?

An illusion is when one thing appears to be another. An illusion is uncovered when the thing's true nature is revealed. The illusions of the a magician are straightforward, as are those of sight, sound, and attention. Sometimes, however, the word illusion is used in a more audacious context.

Consciousness is an illusion. Reality is an illusion.

Surely it's true that we do not understand all of reality, nor of ourselves. But what could it mean to say that our minds are illusory? How can an illusion say anything at all? Can reality be illusory? There is nothing to mistake reality for but more reality. The order of naming is important here. One can, and one must, and one does, name before the entirety of the object is understood—but the object is there, being grasped, and there is a mind doing the grasping. Take care not to build on sand, and descend into madness.
